Romano Jones

Romano Jones

Romano Jones worked for 23 years at Health + Hospital East New York, Gotham Health Center when he first started with the City of New York. In 1997, he was elected as a Shop Steward with Local 1199, his union at the time. He participated in helping organize the 1199 workers at that location.

In 2003, he decided to expand his knowledge base and accepted a vacant position as Health Care Program Planner Analyst in the HATS (HIV/ AIDS Treatment Services) department, and he became a member of CWA Local 1180. In 2004, he was called on by his Local 1180 co-workers who knew of his past Shop Steward successes to become their Shop Steward.

While at East New York Gotham Health Center, he conducted workshops, provided individual and group counseling and nutrition services, and participated in outreach programs that were organized by the community, East New York clinic, schools, and churches. He also was instrumental in expanding HIV testing at East New York Clinic and organized and coordinated health initiative programs for staff and diabetics.

Jones is committed to Local 1180 and the labor movement, even engaging his family when he attended various union rallies and parades. He has been a regular participant at Shop Steward trainings and has attended workshops at the CUNY School of Labor and Urban Studies (formerly the Murphy Institute), which helped impart him with additional knowledge and understanding of labor issues. Jones has gained valuable insight to labor relations while attending CWA Local 1180’s leadership program.

His determination to assist members with workplace-related labor issues earned him their trust and respect, having served as their Shop Steward 15 years.

On Feb. 4, 2019, Jones was appointed as a CWA Local 1180 Staff Representative, where he remains dedicated to serving a wider group of members.
